Important - Please see fitting instructions before installing into metal or uPVC doors. It is not possible to cut holes in to existing glass, (single or double glazed units) because the glass will be toughened glass. You must therefore take your cat flap to a glazing company, who must reglaze the door, cutting the required hole in the glass before its toughened,  or remove the glass section and replace it with a new upvc panel.

Staywell 500 Series - Infra - Red

Q Will it work if I install the cat flap in metal or UPVC doors?
A Yes. The system works just like your remote car key sending out IR signals to the receiver which unlocks the door. As long as the key is in line of sight with the door it will work every time.

Q What if someone next door buys an Infra Red cat flap. Is there a way to make sure that their cat's Infra Red key will not open my door?
A Yes. We have 4 different coloured keys each with a different coded frequency: blue, pink, yellow and green see below. When you power up your cat flap initially it reads the frequency being sent from your key and memorises it so that it will only respond to that frequency in the future. If you have a green one and the neighbour has a yellow one everyone is happy as only your cat can get into your home. If, however, you both have green keys, simply contact our Consumer Service team and they will be pleased to exchange your Infra Red key for another colour. Simply follow the set-up instructions and immediately you have your problem solved.

Q What is the range of the Infra Red keys. How near does my cat need to be to make it work?
A The key is designed to operate at a distance of approximately 6". This can vary depending on surrounding reflective surfaces which may increase this range slightly. The distance has been set at the optimum 6" level to ensure that your cat only operates the mechanism when it wishes to enter your home. This special range feature has been designed to ensure that when your cat is some distance away from the door it cannot be opened accidentally allowing other cats entry to your home.

Q What batteries do I need and how often do I need to change them?
A For the collar key you need 2 coin cell batteries: 2 x SR44, LR44, D357 any of which can easily be purchased at a variety of stores. Batteries should be changed every 6 months for maximum performance. Lack of range is a symptom of low battery power in the key and new batteries should be installed without delay. We would recommend that your keep spare batteries handy. For the cat flap itself you need 4 x AA 1.5V Akaline Long Life batteries. Do not use rechargeable batteries as they do not provide the power level required for optimum performance. With normal usage the batteries should be changed every six months. We have, however, designed a warning system in the cat flap which emits a bleep every two minutes when the batteries are running low. You should immediatey replace the batteries with new Alkaline Long Life ones.

Q The collar key appears to get warm when I put in the batteries. Have I done something wrong?
A Yes. This can only happen if the batteries have not been inserted correctly in line with the manufacturer's instructions. Immediately remove the batteries and re-insert correctly. This should resolve the problem (always read the instructions first).

Q Must I use batteries. I am concerned that might forget to renew the batteries and my cat cannot get in through the door. Have you a solution to my concern?
A Yes. You can purchase a mains transformer unit see below (full installation instructions are supplied with the unit).

Q I am not technically minded and am concerned about what is involved in programming the Infra Red cat flap. Is it user-friendly to set-up?
A Yes. Staywell have designed the product to make it easy to install and to operate. Once you have put the batteries in the cat flap and also into the collar key worn by your cat, simply approach the cat flap pointing the key towards it. The red light which started flashing when you loaded the batteies into the door suddenly stops and the unit emits a bleep. This indicates that your cat flap and key have now been programmed correctly. It's as simple as that.

Q Can I set it to "open only" while my cat gets used to coming in the door?
A Yes. Simply remove the hinge cover, make sure that the batteries are correctly in place and then press the manual button once. The latch will unlock and the red light will flash. To return to the automatic unlatching programme simply press the manual button which will cause the latch to lock again and the red light flashes.

Q The unit relatches whilst the cat is still coming through
A The relatch time can be adjusted on this model between 2 and 20 seconds depending on your personal preference. To adjust the relatch time:
 Remove hinge cover
Press manual button ? LED will flash and latch open
Press timer button within 2 seconds
Each time the button is pressed the unit emits a high beep which indicates that the relatch time has increased by 1 second.
Once you have reached the desired relatch time, press the manual button again. The latch will lock and is ready to use with the new relatch time
When setting the relatch time, after the 20th beep, (where the relatch time will be at 20 seconds

Training your cat to use the cat flap

Most cats will learn to use the cat flap almost at once but there are a few who may be a little nervous at fi rst. The following tips will help your pet to take full advantage of the outdoor freedom and indoor comfort – which you want for your cat – and which your new cat flap provides. The most important rule is to be patient with your cat. Don’t be in a hurry. Let your cat work out for itself that it can go in and out of doors. Don’t force it through the flap or it may become frightened. Many cat owners install cat flaps when they move house. If this applies to you, make sure that your cat is familiar with his or her surroundings before you fi t the cat flap. Take it on supervised trips outdoors on a leash and make sure it also feels secure and comfortable in its new indoor environment. Cats can develop long lasting fears in unfamiliar surroundings.

Once you have installed your cat flap, leave the flap open for some time. You can do this by using a long strip of masking tape; open the flap and use the tape to keep it held open by fi xing the other end of the tape to the surface above. Make sure that the fi xing is secure so that the flap can not fall down accidentally. Let your cat become familiar with it and go in and out freely. Establish a motive for your cat to use the door. A good one is food. First feed the cat near the door, inside and then near the door outside. Repeat as often as you need to. Most cats, especially kittens, also have a strong urge for freedom, perhaps to hunt. Cats are also social creatures – they enjoy the company of other cats. This can be another reason for them to explore outside.

If this is something new to your cat, it may take some patience to teach your cat how to use it. When your cat makes progress, give them a lot of praise - they’ve earned it!

Cleaning the cat flap

Your cat flap is constructed in the highest quality material with a toughened flap and has been designed to last for many years. To maintain its appearance, occasional wiping with a damp cloth is all that is necessary.
